Some GUADEC 2006 presentation thoughts...
The Mozification of GNOME (need new title!)
Goals
- Getting more love and respect for Mozilla technology on Linux
- Getting people excited about writing XUL apps on Linux, and contributing to XUL development
- More integration of Gnome community into the Mozilla community
- Positioning Linux/Gnome as the chosen development environment for Mozilla plugin authors
- Path towards using XUL framework in writing great GTK+ apps
- Don't fork anything!
Reasoning
- Mozilla family of apps already replacing "native" Gnome apps
- Firefox is de facto
- Evolution development is slowing, Thunderbird is ramping up(ish), Webmail makes them both less necessary
- Songbird could outdo existing Linux music players
- Mozilla apps are poorly integrated with Gnome versus other platforms
- File chooser, theme, mimetypes, installation
- Many innovative new open-source apps will be written in XUL in the coming years
- Rich web-apps are a possible future of desktop applications, and Gnome can get involved now to drive some of the innovation
Technical Reasoning:
- Major API shift coming to Gnome soon anyway (see Project Ridley)
- Gnome has a poor plugin/extension story
- Cairo and 3D makes the world of rendering and themed widget hierarchy difficult to integrate well. Mozilla dealing with this now.
- Interface Guidlines scale very poorly given Cairo. Accept losing the battle, and let users choose?
- Gnome has a poor cross-platform story
